Special Educational Needs

In St. Mary's we are committed to providing an appropriate and high quality education to all the children within our school. We believe that all children, including those identified as having special educational needs, have a common entitlement to a broad and balanced academic and social curriculum, which is accessible to them. We equally value all pupils in the school and strive to eliminate prejudice and discrimination thereby developing an environment where all children flourish and feel safe.

Provision for pupils with additional/special educational needs is a priority in St Mary’s Primary School through a whole school approach.

  • We recognise the right of every pupil to a broad and balanced education tailored to his/her own ability.
  • We are deeply committed to making the best provision possible for children with additional educational needs in partnership with parents and other agencies.
  • We aim to provide maximum opportunities for all children and to ensure that all children are valued equally regardless of disability, culture, gender or cognitive development.

What does SEN mean?

In the 1996 Education Order, a child is described as having special educational needs (SEN) if they have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than other children which calls for special educational provision to be made for them, that is additional to or otherwise different from that which children of a similar age receive in an ordinary school. A child has SEN if they have a disability that calls for special educational provision to be made for them.

There are 5 overarching areas of SEN needs:

  • Social, Behaviour, Emotional and Wellbeing
  • Cognition and Learning
  • Speech, Language and Communication
  • Sensory
  • Physical
